UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - October 12, 2010 - Paced by "Sunday Night Football," which was the #1 primetime program of the week in adults 18-49 for the fifth straight week, NBC averaged a 2.4 rating, 7 share in adults 18-49 and 7.0 million viewers overall for the week of October 4-10, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research. For the week, NBC ranked #3 or tied for #3 in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and total viewers and ranked #2 in men 18-49, men 18-34 (tie) and men 25-54.
NBC Sports' "Sunday Night Football" telecast of the Philadelphia Eagles versus the San Francisco 49ers topped the weekly primetime rankings in adults 18-49. This marks the fifth straight week that "NBC Sunday Night Football" has ranked #1 in primetime's key demographic. "Sunday Night Football" also ranked #1 among all primetime programs this week in adults 25-54, adults 18-34 and all key adult-male demographics - men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. In total viewers, "NBC Sunday Night Football" ranked #3 among all primetime programs this week.
Primetime averages for the week of October 4-10 in adults 18-49 were CBS (3.0/9), ABC (2.5/7), NBC and Fox (2.4/7) and CW (1.1/3). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (11.9 million), ABC (8.8 million), NBC (7.0 million), Fox (6.1 million) and CW (2.3 million).
Season-to-date through three weeks, NBC is tied for #2 in adults 18-49, and is up 4 percent versus year-ago levels (2.8 vs. 2.7). NBC is also up 3 percent in adults 25-54 (3.2 vs. 3.1) and up 3 percent in total viewers versus the first three weeks of last season (8.064 million vs. 7.821 million).
NBC highlights for the week of October 4-10
* On Sunday, NBC Sports' "Sunday Night Football" telecast of the Philadelphia Eagles at the San Francisco 49ers propelled NBC to a Sunday primetime win in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and all key adult-male demographics.
* Sunday's Eagles-49ers game was the top-rated "Sunday Night Football" week #5 game in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures in three years. It was up 8 percent in 18-49 rating and 5 percent in total viewers versus the "Sunday Night Football" game that aired during the same week last year and up 22 percent in 18-49 and 19 percent in total viewers versus the comparable 2008 game.
* On Friday, "Dateline NBC" ranked #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in its two-hour time period in adults 18-49, matching its highest Friday 18-49 rating in seven months.
* On Thursday, "The Office" ranked #2 in its tough time period in adults 18-49 and was #1, ahead of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," CBS's "CSI" and Fox's "Fringe" in all key adult-male demographics - men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54.
* Also on Thursday, "30 Rock" built by 17 percent in adults 18-49 on its lead-in and also was up 11 percent versus NBC's slot average during the 2009-10 traditional season. In its time period, "30 Rock" ranked #2 among ABC, CBS NBC and Fox in adults 18-34 and men 18-49 and was #1 in men 18-34.
* "The Office" ranked #16 (tied) among all primetime programs this week in adults 18-49 and was the #4 program of the week among adults 18-34 (excludes all football pre-game and post-game telecasts).
* Additionally on Thursday, the new comedy "Outsourced" ranked #1, ahead of the concluding half-hours of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," CBS's "CSI" and Fox's "Fringe," in men 18-34 and was #2 in adults 18-34, behind only "Grey's."
* "Outsourced" is the #1 new network show of the season in adults 18-34, averaging a 3.5 rating in that demo through three telecasts.
* In figures released for the season's first week, NBC's Thursday comedies "Community," "30 Rock" and "The Office" were the #1, #2 and #3 biggest gainers respectively on a percentage basis in going from "live plus same day" to "live plus seven" 18-49 ratings among all primetime half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. And NBC's new Thursday comedy, "Outsourced" was the #1 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among first-year half-hour comedies during premiere week on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.
* On Wednesday, "Law & Order: Los Angeles" ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and other key demographic measures.
* "Law & Order: LA" was up 26 percent in adult 18-49 rating and 28 percent in total viewers versus NBC's average in this slot last season. "Law & Order: LA" is the #2 new 10 p.m. ET drama thus far this season in adults 18-49 behind only CBS's "Hawaii Five-0."
* Also on Wednesday, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" was up 44 percent in 18-49 rating and 38 percent or more than 2.4 million persons in total viewers versus NBC's time period averages in the slot last season.
* From its first half-hour to its second, "Law & Order: SVU" grew by 22 percent in adults 18-49, 26 percent in adults 18-34, 23 percent in adults 25-54 and 17 percent or nearly 1.4 million persons in total viewers.
* On Tuesday, "Parenthood" was up week-to-week by 5 percent in 18-49 rating and 7 percent in total viewers. "Parenthood" ranked #1 in its time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults and women 18-34 and was #2 in adults 18-49.
* It's worth noting that in the season's first week, "Parenthood" added 37 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" ratings to its "live plus seven day" results. On a percentage basis, "Parenthood" was the #2 biggest gainer from "live plus same day" to "live plus seven" during premiere week among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox
* Also on Tuesday, "The Biggest Loser" gained 23 percent in adults 18-49 from its first half-hour to its fourth, despite formidable time-period competition that included Fox's "Glee," CBS's "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" and ABC's "No Ordinary Family" and "Dancing With the Stars."
* On Monday, "The Event" was up 41 percent in 18-49 rating and 46 percent in total viewers versus NBC's non-sports average in its time period during the traditional 2009-10 season.
* "The Event" built on its lead-in by 26 percent in 18-49 rating and by 40 percent in total viewers.
* In the season's first week, "The Event" added 27 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure. Starting with no time-shifted viewing by using its "live only" rating as the base, "The Event" derived 35 percent of its "live plus seven" rating from time-shifted viewing, making "The Event" the most time-shifted new primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox during premiere week.
* Also on Monday, "Chase" was up 13 percent in both 18-49 rating and total viewers versus NBC's non-sports average in its time period during the traditional 2009-10 season.
* Additionally On Monday, "Chuck" retained 95 percent of its 18-49 rating and 100 percent of its overall viewership from the prior week. "Chuck" increased from its first half-hour to its second in virtually all key demographic measures as well as in total viewers.
Ratings reflect "live plus same day" data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of "live plus seven day" data except for the two most recent weeks, which are "live plus same day."
Additional NBC highlights for the week of October 4-10:
On Monday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. ET, "Chuck" (1.9 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall) retained 95 percent of its 18-49 rating from the prior week (1.9 vs. 2.0) while maintaining its overall viewership (5.4 million). "Chuck" matched its 18-49 average for the May sweep earlier this year (1.9 vs. 1.9).
"Chuck" increased from its first half-hour to its second in virtually all key demographic measures as well as in total viewers, including gains of 11 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.0 from a 1.8), 9 percent in adults 25-54 (to a 2.4 from a 2.2) and 13 percent in adults 18-34 (to a 1.7 from a.1.5).
It's worth noting that in the season's first week, "Chuck" added 27 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 2.58 rating from a 2.03).
Monday from 9-10 p.m. ET, "The Event" (2.4/6 in adults 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 26 percent in 18-49 rating and by 40 percent or more than 2.1 million persons in total viewers.
"The Event" delivered a 41 percent increase in adults 18-49 versus NBC's 1.7 average for both the same night last year and the network's average in the time period during the regular 2009-10 season (non-sports "live plus same day").
In total viewers, "The Event" was up 46 percent, or nearly 2.4 million persons, versus NBC's "live plus same day" non-sports average in the hour last season (7.6 million vs. 5.2 million).
In the season's first week, "The Event" added 27 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 4.60 rating from a 3.61). Starting with no time-shifted viewing by using its "live only" rating as the base, "The Event" derived 35 percent of its "live plus seven" rating from time-shifted viewing (1.60 points of a 4.60 rating in L+7), making "The Event" the most time-shifted new primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox during premiere week.
Monday at 10 p.m. ET, "Chase" averaged a 1.7/5 in adults 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers overall.
"Chase" was up 13 percent in 18-49 rating versus NBC's non-sports average in this time period during the traditional 2009-10 season (1.7 vs. 1.5, non-sports "live plus same day") and also up 13 percent in total viewers versus NBC's "live plus same day" non-sports average in the hour last season (5.8 million vs. 5.1 million).
In the season's first week, "Chase" added 23 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 2.81 rating from a 2.29).
Versus the same Monday night last year, NBC was up 5 percent in adult 18-49 rating (2.0 vs. 1.9) and 22 percent in total viewers (6.2 million vs. 5.1 million).
On Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 8-10 p.m. ET, "The Biggest Loser 10" averaged a 2.5/7 in adults 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period that included Fox's "Glee," CBS's "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" and ABC's "No Ordinary Family" and the "Dancing With the Stars" Results Show.
From its first half-hour to its fourth, "Biggest Loser" grew by 23 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 2.7 from a 2.2) and 11 percent in total viewers (to 7.4 million from 6.7 million). By the 9:30-10 p.m. ET half-hour, "Biggest Loser" ranked #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in women 18-34 and #2 (tied) in women 18-49.
Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, "Parenthood" (2.1/6 in adults 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall) was up week-to-week by 5 percent in 18-49 rating (2.1 vs. 2.0) and 7 percent in total viewers (5.2 million vs. 4.8 million). In the time period, "Parenthood" ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults and women 18-34 and #2 in adults 18-49.
It's worth noting that in the season's first week, "Parenthood" added 37 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" ratings to its "live plus seven day" results (to a 3.37 rating from a 2.46). On a percentage basis, "Parenthood" was the #2 biggest gainer from "live plus same day" to "live plus seven" during premiere week among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, second only to Fox's "Fringe."
On Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 8-9 p.m. ET, "Undercovers" averaged a 1.5/5 in 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall. "Undercovers" grew from half-hour to half-hour in all key ratings categories - adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 - as well as in total viewers. In adults 18-49, "Undercovers" increased by 14 percent from its first half-hour to its second (to a 1.6 from a 1.4).
Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (2.6/7 in 18-49, 8.7 million viewers overall) grew dramatically from its first half-hour to its second in all key measures. "SVU" increased by 22 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.8 from a 2.3), 26 percent in adults 18-34 (2.4 vs. 1.9), 23 percent in adults 25-54 (3.2 vs. 2.6) and 17 percent or nearly 1.4 million persons in total viewers (to 9.4 million from 8.0 million).
Versus NBC's time period averages in this slot last season, "Law & Order; SVU" was up 44 percent in 18-49 rating (2.6 vs. 1.8) and 38 percent or more than 2.4 million persons in total viewers (8.7 million vs. 6.3 million).
In the season's first week, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" added 22 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 3.93 rating from a 3.22).
Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET, "Law & Order: Los Angeles" (2.4/7 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and in all key adult-female demographics. "Law & Order: LA" retained 92 percent of its adult 18-49 lead-in from "Law & Order: SVU" and 97 percent of its adult 25-54 lead-in (2.8 vs. 2.9).
Versus NBC's slot averages last season, "Law & Oder: Los Angeles" was up 26 percent in 18-49 rating (2.4 vs. 1.9) and 28 percent or 1.8 million persons in total viewers (8.3 million vs. 6.5 million).
"Law & Order: Los Angeles" is the #2 new 10 p.m. ET drama thus far this season in adults 18-49 behind only CBS's "Hawaii Five-0." Among the 10 p.m. dramas "Law & Order: LA" is outpacing are CBS's "The Defenders," ABC's "Detroit 1-8-7" and ABC's "The Whole Truth" (1.5).
On Thursday, Oct. 7 from 8-8:30 p.m. ET, "Community" averaged a 1.8/6 in 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall. Despite time-period competition that included CBS's "Big Bang Theory," "Community" finished within 0.1 of a rating point of NBC's 18-49 average in the slot during the traditional 2009-10 season (1.9, non-sports, "live plus same day"). In the time period, "Community" ranked #2 among ABC, CBS NBC and Fox in men 18-34 and men 18-49 (tie).
In the season's first week, "Community" added 31 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 2.86 rating from a 2.18). On a percentage basis, "Community" was the #1 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among primetime half-hour comedies during premiere week on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.
Thursday from 8:30-9 p.m. ET, "30 Rock" (2.1/7 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) built by 17 percent in adults 18-49 on its lead-in from "Community" and also generated an 11 percent increase on NBC's slot average during the traditional 2009-10 season (1.9, non-sports, "live plus same day"). This build on lead-in is a substantial improvement versus NBC's performance in this slot last season when the network was flat in this time period versus first-run lead-ins from "Community." In its time period, "30 Rock" ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-34 and men 18-49 and #1 in men 18-34.
In the season's first week, "30 Rock" added 29 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 3.32 rating from a 2.58). On a percentage basis, "30 Rock" was the #2 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among primetime half-hour comedies during premiere week on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox, behind only "Community."
Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, "The Office" (3.5/9 in adults 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in the time period in adults 18-49 and was #1, ahead of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," CBS's "CSI" and Fox's "Fringe" in all key adult-male demographics - men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54. "The Office" matched its 18-49 average in the most recent May sweep (3.5) and was up 3 percent in total viewers (7.0 million vs. 6.8 million).
In the season's first week, "The Office" added 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 5.54 rating from a 4.38). On a percentage basis, "The Office" was the #3 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among primetime half-hour comedies during premiere week on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox, behind only "Community" and "30 Rock."
Thursday from 9:31-10 p.m. ET, "Outsourced" delivered a 2.5/7 in 18-49 and 5.2 million viewers overall. "Outsourced" ranked #1, ahead of the concluding half-hours of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," CBS's "CSI" and Fox's "Fringe," in men 18-34 and was #2 in adults 18-34, behind only "Grey's."
In the season's first week, "Outsourced" added 19 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 4.29 rating from a 3.59). On a percentage basis, "Outsourced" was the #1 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among first-year half-hour comedies during premiere week on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.
Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, "The Apprentice" averaged a 1.3/4 in 18-49 and 3.7 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, "Apprentice" maintained its 18-49 rating and grew 9 percent in total viewers. "The Apprentice" matched its 18-49 rating of the prior week and increased 3 percent week-to-week in total viewers (3.7 million vs. 3.6 million).
In the season's first week, "The Apprentice" added 30 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported "live plus same day" rating to its "live plus seven day" figure (to a 1.78 rating from a 1.37).
On Friday, Oct. 8 from 8-10 p.m. ET, "Dateline NBC" (1.6/6 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in its two-hour time period among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49, matching its highest Friday 18-49 rating in seven months (since March 5). From its first half-hour to its fourth, "Dateline" grew by 21 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.7 from a 1.4).
Friday from 10-11 p.m. ET, "Outlaw" averaged a 0.9/3 in adults 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall.
On Saturday, Oct. 2 from 8-9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of "The Event" averaged a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 2.1 million viewers overall.
Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of "Law & Order: Los Angeles" (0.6/2 in 18-49, 3.2 million viewers overall) increased from half-hour to half-hour by 20 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.6 from a 0.5).
Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 83 percent in 18-49 rating and 40 percent in total viewers. From its first half-hour to its second, "SVU" grew by 20 percent in adult 18-49 rating (to a 1.2 from a 1.0) and 15 percent in total viewers (4.8 million vs. 4.1 million).
On Sunday Oct. 10, the "NBC Sunday Night Football" telecast of the Philadelphia Eagles at the San Francisco 49ers led NBC to a Sunday primetime win in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and all key adult-male demographics. For its full duration, the Eagles-49ers game averaged a 6.7/18 in adults 18-49, 16.9 million viewers overall and a 10.3/17 household rating/share from 8:31-11:43 p.m. ET.
NBC's margin of victory over the #2 network in primetime Sunday night was 10 percent in adults 18-49 (5.4 vs. a 4.9 for CBS, which was boosted by an NFL overrun).
Sunday's Eagles-49ers game was the top-rated "Sunday Night Football" week #5 game in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures in three years (since the Bears-Packers on October 7, 2007). This year's game was up 8 percent in 18-49 rating and 5 percent in total viewers versus the "Sunday Night Football" game that aired during the same week last year (a 6.2/16 in 18-49 and 16.017 million viewers overall for the Colts-Titans match-up on October 11, 2009) and up 22 percent in adults 18-49 and 19 percent in total viewers versus the week #5 game in 2008 (a 5.5/14 in 18-49 and 14.207 million viewers overall for the Steelers-Jaguars on October 5, 2008).
Also on Sunday, "Football Night in America 2" from 7:30-7:58 p.m. ET averaged a 0.9/3 in 18-49, 2.3 million viewers overall and a 1.5/3 household rating/share. "Football Night in America 3" from 7:58-8:22 p.m. delivered a 3.5/11 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall and a 5.3/9 in households. From 8:22-8:31 p.m., "NBC Sunday Night Football Pre Kickoff" averaged a 4.9/14 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall and a 7.3/12 in households. Note: "Football Night in America" from 7-7:30 p.m. ET was sustaining programming and does not figure in the nightly or weekly primetime averages.
