"48 HOURS: THE LAST CONFESSION" IS SATURDAY'S #1 PROGRAM WITH ADULTS 25-54 - THE DEMOGRAPHIC THAT MATTERS MOST TO THOSE WHO ADVERTISE IN NEWS - AS WELL AS VIEWERS
48 HOURS: "The Last Confession" was Saturday's #1 program with adults 25-54 (tie with TBS) - the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news - and was #1 in viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for March 1, 2014.
48 HOURS delivered 5.44m viewers and a 1.3/04 with adults 25-54. 48 HOURS posted its largest audience since Nov. 23, 2013.
Saturday's broadcast featured Richard Schlesinger and 48 HOURS' report on the investigation into the murder of Irene Garza and the five-decade quest by family members to bring a former priest to trial.
Irene Garza was 25 years old in 1960 when she told her family she was going to church for confession. She was never seen alive again. Five days after she disappeared, she was found dead in a canal. Police said she was physically assaulted, sexually assaulted and was suffocated.
Police questioned hundreds of people but focused on Father John Feit, who admitted hearing Garza's confession, though steadfastly denied any involvement in her murder. The case then went cold until 2002, when a former monk, Dale Tacheny, told police that decades earlier when he was working as a counselor at a monastery, Feit admitted to killing a young woman. An assistant pastor at the church in 1960 also told investigators in 2002 that Feit told him he did it.
But Hildago County, Texas District Attorney Rene Guerra did not believe the case was strong enough to take to court today, and questioned the reliability of the two main witnesses.
Met outside of his home, Feit told Schlesinger he didn't kill Garza and does not know who did. Feit also says those who say he did are wrong.
