ABC ranked No. 1 for the 3rd week in a row among Adults 18-49 (w/o 4/28/14 - 1.6/5-tie), registering its longest in-season (Sept-May) streak at No. 1 in more than 6-1/2 years - since leading the first 3 weeks of the 2007-08 season. The Network has now finished No. 1 on 5 of the last 10 weeks in the key young adult sales demo, and, on average since the end of the Winter Olympics, ABC is the No. 1 TV network (Most Current data for 2/24-5/4/14): ABC (2.3/7), CBS (2.2/7), NBC (2.0/6) and Fox (1.7/5).
· Building week to week in Total Viewers (+3% - 6.6 million vs. 6.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+7% - 1.6/5 vs. 1.5/5), ABC marked its most-watched non-Oscar week since November and equaled its best number since early-March in Adults 18-49 - since weeks of 11/25/13 and 3/10/14, respectively.
Rankings: The Network aired 7 of the Top 20 TV programs in Adults 18-49: "Modern Family" - No. 4, "Grey's Anatomy" and "DWTS" tied at No. 7, "Shark Tank" - No. 12, while "S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Once Upon a Time" and "Resurrection" tied at No. 20. For the 7th week running, "Dancing" was the top unscripted series in Total Viewers, delivering TV's most-watched unscripted telecast of the 2013-14 season. Also for the 7th straight week, the ABC unscripted series outdelivered both editions of "American Idol" in Adults 18-49. ABC's "20/20" was the No. 1 newsmagazine in key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), leading for the 3rd week in a row with Adults 18-49.
Monday
ABC was the most-watched TV network on the first Monday of the May Sweep for the 8th straight year, leading the night for the 3rd consecutive week and outdrawing runner-up NBC by 25% (14.1 million vs. 11.3 million). The Net finished a strong 2nd on the night in Adults 18-49 (2.4/7), outdelivering CBS by 50% (1.6/5) and Fox's dramas by 100% (1.2/3). "Dancing" was the night's most-watched TV program overall.
· The Network drew is largest overall Monday audience in over 1 year - since 3/18/13. In addition, posted its top Adults 18-49 performance on the night in 7 weeks (since 3/10/14), matching its 2nd strongest demo number this season.
· ABC was the only net up over the same Monday last May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (4/29/13), gaining 13% in viewers and 14% in young adults.
"Dancing with the Stars" (8:00-10:01 p.m. - 15.9 million and 2.6/7 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:01 p.m., ABC's "DWTS" finished as the night's most-watched TV series for the 7th week running, outdrawing NBC's "The Voice" head-to-head by a best-of-season 4.3 million viewers (15.9 million vs. 11.6 million). In fact, the Latin-themed "DWTS" on Monday stands as TV's most-watched unscripted telecast of the 2013-14 season. And continuing to close the gap with young adults, "Dancing" marked its most competitive Adult 18-49 finish ever with "The Voice," (2.6/7 vs. 3.0/6) coming within 4-tenths of a rating point (vs. 8-tenths difference last week and a 1.1 rating point difference two weeks ago).
· "Dancing" was up week to week in viewers (+13%) and young adults (+18%), hitting season-highs in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (tie). In addition, "DWTS" was up over the same night last year (13.5 million and 2.1/6 on 4/29/13) by double digits in Total Viewers (+18%) and Adults 18-49 (+24%), tallying its 5th consecutive week of year-over-year gains on both measures.
"Castle" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 10.4 million and 2.0/6 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Castle" was up week to week in Total Viewers (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+11%), drawing its biggest audience in 5 months and hitting a nearly 3-month high with young adults - since 11/25/13 and 2/3/14, respectively.
Tuesday
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (8:00-9:01 p.m. - 5.9 million and 2.1/6 in AD18-49):
During the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was up 11% in Adults 18-49 to equal a 12-week high - since 2/4/14. In addition, the new drama grew 15% in Adults 18-34 to its best number since early-March - since 3/11/14.
· The ABC freshman series continues to see big gains via TV playback. In the most-recent weekly Live + 7 Day ratings (w/o 4/7/14), "S.H.I.E.L.D." posted the series' biggest-ever jump, spiking 79% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 number (going from a 1.9 rating to a 3.4 rating).
· Among Men 18-34, "S.H.I.E.L.D." beat CBS' "NCIS" in the hour by 23% and NBC's "The Voice" by 33%, ranking as the No. 1 scripted series in its slot for its 20th-consecutive first-run telecast. In fact, season to date, it is Tuesday's No. 1 TV show with Men 18-34 and Men 18-49.
· "S.H.I.E.L.D." more than doubled its time period year to year for ABC in Adults 18-49, spiking 133% over the year-ago night with original programming ("Splash" on 4/30/13 = 0.9/3).
"The Goldbergs" (9:01-9:31 p.m. - 4.8 million and 1.7/5 in AD18-49):
During the 9:00 p.m. half-hour, returning to original for the first time in 3 weeks, ABC's "The Goldbergs" surged 21% in Adults 18-49 to tie its highest rating in more than 3 months - since 1/14/14. "The Goldbergs" emerged as the night's No. 1 comedy in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5), beating out NBC's "The Voice"-led "About a Boy" (+6% - 1.6/5) for the first time and outdelivering Fox's "New Girl" (1.1/3) by a best-ever 55%.
· The new ABC comedy improved its half-hour from the year-ago night with "DWTS: The Results" by 13% in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5 vs. 1.5/4).
"Trophy Wife" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 3.2 million and 1.0/3 in AD18-49):
During the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Trophy Wife" was up over its last original 3 weeks ago by 14% in Total Viewers, by 25% in Adults 18-49 and by 40% in Adults 18-34. The ABC freshman comedy outdrew Fox's "The Mindy Project" in the half-hour by 45% in Total Viewers (3.2 million vs. 2.2 million).
"Celebrity Wife Swap" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 2.8 million and 0.8/2 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., "Celebrity Wife Swap" paced within 1-tenth of its week-ago Adult 18-49 rating.
Wednesday
ABC delivered Wednesday's No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49, with "Modern Family" ranking as the night's highest-rated program for its 7th consecutive original airing. On the night, ABC's "Modern Family" (2.8/8) outperformed the top-rated shows on each of the other nets by wide margins, leading CBS' "Survivor" by 22% (2.3/7), NBC's "Chicago PD" by 47% (1.9/6) and Fox's "American Idol" by 47% (1.9/6 - matching a Wednesday low).
"The Middle" (8:00-8:30 p.m. - 7.4 million and 1.8/6 in AD18-49):
At 8:00 p.m. against CBS' "Survivor" and Fox's "Idol," ABC's "The Middle" ranked as the No. 1 series for the 2nd straight week in the half-hour among Adults 18-34 (1.1/5-tie) and key Women: W18-34 (1.6/6) and W18-49 (2.3/8-tie). In addition, the ABC comedy tied "Idol" in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6) for No. 2 in the half-hour.
· The ABC comedy was up 3% in Total Viewers week to week (7.4 million vs. 7.2 million) and paced within 1-tenth in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6 vs. 1.9/7). In addition, the show spiked 27% in Teens 12-17 to deliver a 12-week high - since 2/5/14.
"Suburgatory" (8:30-9:00 p.m. - 5.5 million and 1.5/5 in AD18-49):
At 8:30 p.m., "Suburgatory" took 2nd in its half-hour to "Idol" with Women 18-34 (1.3/5), beating "Survivor" by 18% (1.1/4) and NBC's "Revolution" by 44% (0.9/3). In addition, the ABC comedy beat the second half-hour of "Revolution" by 25% in Adults 18-49 (1.5/5 vs. 1.2/4).
"Modern Family" (9:00-9:31 p.m. - 8.4 million and 2.8/8 in AD18-49):
Nearly doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+87%), ABC's "Modern Family" (2.8/8) dominated its half-hour, outdelivering CBS' "Criminal Minds" by 33% (2.1/6), Fox's "American Idol" by 47% (1.9/6) and NBC's "L&O: SVU" by 56% (1.8/5).
"Mixology" (9:31-10:00 p.m. - 3.8 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
Despite increased original competition in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC's "Mixology" ran within 1-tenth week to week in Adults 18-34 (0.9/3).
"Nashville" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 4.6 million and 1.2/4 in AD18-49):
During the 10 o'clock hour, returning to original for the first time in 4 weeks, ABC's "Nashville" was up over the prior week's "Nashville: On the Record" special by 20% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/4 vs. 1.0/3).
· On average, "Nashville" is ABC's top percentage gainer this season via TV Playback and Top 3 among all broadcast series, with originals shooting up 80% from a 1.5 L+SD rating to a 2.7 Live + 7 Day Adult 18-49 rating.
Thursday
With a repeat "Grey's Anatomy" at 8:00 p.m., an original "Grey's" at 9:00 p.m. and "Black Box" at 10:00 p.m., ABC finished No. 2 on Thursday in Total Viewers (6.2 million), while winning the night in Women 18-34 for the 10th straight week.
"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m. - 8.8 million and 2.6/8 in AD18-49):
Surging over its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 9:00 p.m. (+160%), ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" shot up to dominate its hour, beating CBS' comedies by 44% ("Two and a Half Men"/"Bad Teacher" = 1.8/5), NBC's "I Heart Radio Music Awards" by 44% (1.8/5) and Fox with "American Idol" and "Surviving Jack" by 100% (1.3/4). "Grey's" was Thursday's No. 2 TV show with young adults, behind only CBS' "The Big Bang Theory." In fact against "Grey's," "Idol" fell to a new all-time low for any telecast in both viewers and young adults (7.0 million and 1.5/5).
· Growing week to week in Total Viewers (+10%) and Adults 18-49 (+13%), "Grey's" drew its biggest audience since its mid-season return 9 weeks ago - since 2/27/14. Featuring the return of Isaiah Washington, the ABC drama was Thursday's No. 1 most social TV series with 103,992 tweets, spiking 121% week to week.
· In its 10th season, "Grey's Anatomy" is up over the same point last year in both Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 18-49 (+7%), delivering its best numbers in 4 and 3 years, respectively - since the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
"Black Box" (10:00-11:00 p.m. - 5.4 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
In the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "Black Box" retained a solid 87% of its week-earlier debut in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 1.5/5), considerably stronger than the week to week retention for CBS' "Bad Teacher" debut (67% - 1.4/4 vs. 2.1/6). In fact, it was ABC's strongest retention for a drama debut this season.
Friday
ABC won its 2nd consecutive Friday of the May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.8/7), placing No. 1 on the night for the 5th week running and ranking as the No. 1 broadcaster in all 6 half-hours of prime. ABC claimed the Top 3 TV series of the night in Adults 18-49, with "Shark Tank" (hitting a new series high for a regular telecast), "20/20" and "Shark Tank: Swimming with Sharks" (tie), respectively.
· Setting a new season high on the night in Adults 18-49, ABC scored its top-rated Friday since November 2012 - since 11/9/12. In fact, ABC delivered the highest-rated non-sports Friday night on any net this season among young adults.
· For the 2nd week in a row, the Net built over the same Friday last May Sweep, gaining 2.7 million viewers (7.2 million vs. 4.5 million) and 38% in Adults 18-49 (1.8/7 vs. 1.3/5).
"Shark Tank: Swimming with Sharks" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 6.0 million and 1.5/6 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC's "Shark Tank: Swimming with Sharks" special won its hour in Adults 18-49 (1.5/6) and matched a season high for the Net in the time period.
"Shark Tank" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 8.3 million and 2.3/8 in AD18-49):
Shooting up over its lead-in by 53% at 9:00 p.m. in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Shark Tank" (2.3/8) dominated its hour by 77% over NBC's "Grimm" (1.3/4). "Shark Tank" grew week to week by 1.2 million viewers and by 27% in Adults 18-49, drawing its largest audience ever and earning a new series high for a regular telecast with young adults. The show also topped its year-ago telecast (5.7 million and 1.7/6 in AD18-49 on 5/3/13) by wide margins in Total Viewers (+46%) and Adults 18-49 (+35%).
· Up on average by double digits year to year in Total Viewers (+14%), Adults 18-49 (+10%) and Adults 18-34 (+13%), "Shark Tank" is on track for its strongest-ever season with its 3rd straight year of young adult gains.
"20/20" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 7.1 million and 1.7/6 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., ABC's "20/20" won its hour in Adults 18-49 (1.7/6), marking its 9th week in a row as the No. 1 regular program in its time period. ABC's Barbara Walters sat down for an exclusive interview with embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling's female confidante, V. Stiviano. This was the first television interview for Stiviano since the NBA handed Sterling a lifetime ban and a $2.5 million fine on Tuesday for his racial rant about African-Americans featured in a leaked audiotape recording.
· The ABC newsmagazine spiked week to week in Total Viewers (+20%), Adults 18-49 (+21%) and Adults 25-54 (+15%).
· Building season to date in Total Viewers (+23%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%), "20/20" delivering its most-watched season overall in 4 years - since the 2009-10 season.
Sunday
ABC won its 2nd consecutive Sunday of the May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6). ABC's "Once Upon a Time," "Resurrection" and "Revenge" finished as Sunday's Top 3 broadcast dramas with young adults.
· Posting its 2nd week of year-to-year gains, ABC was the only broadcaster up from the year-ago May Sweep Sunday (5.8 million and 1.6/5 on 5/5/13) in Total Viewers (+14%) and Adults 18-49 (+13%).
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (7:00-8:00 p.m. - 6.3 million and 1.6/6 in AD18-49):
During the 7:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos" won its hour for the 2nd week in a row among Adults 18-49 (1.6/6) and held even with the prior week to equal a season high.
· The ABC video clip show was up year to year by 7% in Total Viewers and by 7% in Adults 18-49.
"Once Upon a Time" (8:00-9:00 p.m. - 6.9 million and 2.1/7 in AD18-49):
Growing from its Adult 18-49 lead-in by 31% at 8:00 p.m., ABC's "Once Upon a Time" (2.1/7-tie) ranked No. 1 in its hour, standing as the top-rated series in its time period for the 9th straight week. The show paced within 1-tenth of its week-ago Adult 18-49 rating.
· "Once Upon a Time" continued its run as the No. 1 most social broadcast series on Sunday night with 48,252 tweets, up 17% from the prior week.
"Resurrection" (9:00-10:01 p.m. - 8.2 million and 2.1/6 in AD18-49):
At 9:00 p.m., ABC's season finale of "Resurrection" dominated its regular broadcast competition in the hour for its 8th consecutive telecast in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6), outdelivering Fox's "Cosmos" by 31% (1.6/5) and CBS' "The Good Wife" by 91% (1.1/3), while more than doubling NBC's "Believe" (+110% - 1.0/3). "Resurrection" drew its biggest audience in 5 weeks (2nd straight telecast of growth - since 3/30/14) and gained 11% week to week in Adults 18-49. In addition, the new ABC drama grew week to week in Men 18-49 (+21%) and Men 25-54 (+19%) to its best numbers since March - since 3/30/14 and 3/23/14, respectively.
· On average during its first season, "Resurrection" improved its time period by 67% among Adults 18-49 over the comparable weeks last season (3.5/9 vs. 2.1/5), making it ABC's highest-rated program in the Sunday 9:00 p.m. hour since "Desperate Housewives" - since the 2011-12 season.
"Revenge" (10:01-11:00 p.m. - 5.0 million and 1.3/4 in AD18-49):
During the 10:00 p.m. hour, ABC's "Revenge" ranked as the No. 1 series in its slot for the 2nd straight week among Adults 18-49, over CBS' "The Mentalist" (1.2/3) and NBC's "Crisis" (1.0/3). The ABC drama held steady week to week in Adults 18-49 and grew to 5-week highs in key Women (W18-49/W25-54) - since 3/30/14.
· "Revenge" improved its hour from the same night last year with an original drama by 47% in Total Viewers (5.0 million vs. 3.4 million) and by 63% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/4 vs. 0.8/2).
