Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of García Márquez's Nobel Prize with the Making of Macondo
Francisco Ramos
VP of Latin American Content
On October 21, 1982, Gabriel García Márquez received a phone call from Paris in which he was told that he had won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Today, forty years later, we're honored to announce to Colombia and to the entire world that we've begun construction of the universe that will be home to the series based on García Márquez's world-renowned novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude . A little more than three years ago we announced our decision with García Márquez's family to bring to life the first audiovisual production of this work, and today, with much pride, ambition, and a great sense of commitment and responsibility, we are very happy to share our plans.
Our commitment to this project requires that we work with the best audiovisual artists, writers, producers, directors, production designers, art designers, and costume designers, among many others, as well as the greatest experts of this work, most of whom are Colombian. These artists have already begun creating this universe with utmost precision and ambition, and today, October 21, 2022, we can officially move forward with our next steps.
I am proud to take this opportunity to share some of these artists, whose visions and enthusiasm permeate their daily work, beginning with the two directors who will direct the first season: Alex García López and Laura Mora . Alex has directed series including The Witcher and earlier in his career he directed Utopía , which won the International Emmy for best drama series in 2014. Laura Mora's projects include films such as Killing Jesus and The Kings of the World , which has been selected to represent Colombia in the 2023 Academy Awards, as well as series like Green Frontier and The Great Heist . We know both will bring to this series all their spirit, talent, and passion.
With regard to production design , we feel lucky and honored to be working with Oscar winner Eugenio Caballero , who won for Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro), and whose recent work includes Roma (Alfonso Cuarón) and Bardo (Alejandro G. Iñarritú), in addition to his frequent collaborator, Bárbara Enríquez , whose projects include Roma , for which she was nominated for an Oscar, and The Prize , for which she won the Silver Bear in Berlin. Also, in costume design , we're working with Catherine Rodríguez , whose great work includes Netflix series like The Final Score .
To give life to the audiovisual adaptation of the novel, screenwriter José Rivera , known for films such as Motorcycle Diaries and The 33 , will be joined by Colombian screenwriters Natalia Santa ( The Great Heist ), Camila Brugés ( Green Frontier ) and Albatros González ( Lynch ), as well as María Camila Arias ( The Kings of the World) , who serves as a consultant.
We are also working with Paulo Pérez , director of photography, whose work is known for placing us in complex environments, as seen in Green Frontier , a series filmed in the heart of the Colombian Amazon. The casting directors tasked with finding the hundreds of actors that will make up the Buendía family, and other characters are Yolanda Serrano and Eva Leira , known for their work on projects such as Pain and Glory and Julieta by Pedro Almodóvar and Money Heist , among others
Given the magnitude of this production, we're working hand-in-hand with Dynamo , with whom we already share a great trajectory on series such as Narcos, Crime Diaries: Night Out, Green Frontier , and The Great Heist , among many others. We know that with Diego Ramírez Schrempp , Carolina Caicedo , and experienced Spanish producer Josep Amorós , we're in the best hands. I also must thank the Colombian Ministry of Culture and Proimágenes Colombia for their support and commitment to our project.
As I mentioned earlier, today we start this long journey, which has only been made possible because of the trust granted in us by Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García , and with absolute respect and responsibility, we are committed to telling the story of Macondo and the Buendía family, just as it was conceived by our Nobel laureate.
To conclude, today I'd like to share the first images of Macondo, which will be brought to life in Colombia, across the extensive and diverse geography of this wonderful country.
